Andean artist and shaman, Pablo
Amaringo, describes the meaning of shungo in his painting "Amaru Shungo" (Heart of the Cosmic
Serpent)"
"The heart of the serpent (Amaru) is like a tabernacle where
things of great value for life are kept; that is, it is the root of the physical body’s functioning, the prototype of
bodily function .... It is not the heart, or central organ of the circulatory system which pumps blood, but rather, in the
Quechua language the word shungo does not only refer to the heart but also the stomach. For this reason, to speak of “the
shungo of the serpent” is to say “the stomach of the serpent,” and this resembles a house within the serpent.
About Moira Scullion, LMT, member AMTA , ATMAM, & AHG
A massage therapist for over
ten years, Moira focuses her work on women's reproductive, digestive, and emotional health. Moira specializes
in the Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Massage and in Maya Spiritual Healing. She works with the core of the body
to release old patterns of emotional and physical holding.
Since massage school, Moira has continued to develop
her skills and techniques through various clinics and symosiums (see Professional Development). Currently, she is studying
herbalism and is enrolled in a ministerial training program. In addition to being a life-long student, Moira is
also a teacher. For six years she was a faculty member at her alma mater, Chicago School of Massage Therapy, teaching
all practical classes and lecturing.
Over the past ten years, Moira has seen the profound connection of the
body to the spirit and the emotional states it carries. She has always searched for a way to use the schience of anatomy
and bodywork to facilitate emotional and spiritual healing.
Her own healing has taken her through a
two-year Shaminc studies apprenticeship wit Rainbow Journey, LLC. While this journey taught her tools for healing herself,
it also gave her insight into helping others on their own healing paths. In addition, Moira has journeyed to Belize
to study Maya Spiritual Healing, which deepened her understanding of healing and the body. It was finally
through these studies that Moira began learning how the body and the emotions it carried can work together to achieve health.
Her work now incorporates this spiritual and emotional healing while working with teh core of the body. In this way,
Moira is able to treat the body as a whole, facilitating the connection between the body and spirit, empowering
the individual's journey to find the balance within.
